Joyoung Soy Milk Maker Review, Singapore Kitchen

We enjoy soy milk but after our favourite brand became hard to find and we struggled to sources a minimal additive version that we found tasty, we decided to look into making our own at home.
Soon enough we found a soy milk maker - Joyoung brand - that came recommended by friends and is available for purchase online. And it has become a favourite addition to our kitchen. Here is our review...
Just slightly larger than our water kettle, the unit consists of the 'kettle' body and its 'blender' and heating element. It sits easily on our counter top. The machine has Chinese printed on the control panel but came with English instructions.

Making soy milk is simplicity itself. A scoop of washed beans into the kettle, fill with a litre of water - there is a water level line within the kettle. For best results, allow the beans to soak overnight.
To make soy milk, press 'start'. The machine heats up the water, blends the beans and beeps when finished. Voila, hot soy milk. We were a little apprehensive the first time we used the maker. The machine stops and starts as it heats and blends, it whirrs and purrs with the occasional beep. The entire process takes about 20 minutes.
The maker has other settings to make porridge, grain based dishes and jam. We have not tried these, yet... There is a 10 hour timer delay function that we do rarely use as the regular process is quick and simple. .

Soy milk yield is about 1 litre. As the finished soy milk contains blended beans, the first 3/4 of the milk is liquid; the remaining 1/4 is thicker liquid and pulverised beans - known as okara. This can be filtered or squeezed through a muslin cloth to extract more milk, thrown away or saved added to soups and stews. Kimchi stew, with creamy okara, is now a favourite of ours. The okara can also be dried and cooked into biscuits.
We buy organic soy beans for our milk. Note that fresh soy milk needs to be kept refrigerated and consumed within a few days. It does not keep well.
The kettle and blender head need be washed and rinsed off after use. Simple enough. There is also a programme setting to do this.
Bought online, our unit retails at about S$90.0 (approx US$ 70.0). We bought from LazMall:

As we regularly enjoy soy milk, the maker soon paid for itself. The only recurring cost is for soybeans - plus water and electricity. Click on image below to see our review of soy milk brands (and their nutritional profiles) available in Singapore.
And no, drinking soy milk is not feminising, as gym locker room lore might have us believe.
Final Thoughts

We are very happy with our purchase and the results. Rich and creamy soy milk, unlike the more liquid (watery) version from the carton. The milk does not require any additional sweetness or enhancers, although sometimes we might add some natural almond flavouring. Without fail, we use our soy milk maker 2 to 3 times per week.
