"16 Supplements Replaced" boldly claims the FaceBook advertisement. Marketed as containing Essential Amino Acids: 1 daily serving of IM8 provides a dose of 1.17g split between 8 amino acids; out of a total 11.8g serving size. By weight that is 10% of IM8's daily dose, leaving 91 (of 92) other ingredients in the remaining serving.

So, does 1.17g of protein (amino acids) replace a protein supplement? What does this mean in real terms, how does this amount of protein support health? Let's compare to how protein supplements are normally used, let's put the numbers in context.
As ever, please talk to your doctor or medical practitioner most familiar with your medical history before implementing any changes in diet, exercise or lifestyle, especially if you are under treatment. Links to relevant studies and resources at bottom of page.
The Numbers
IM8 monthly protein dose = 35.1g (30 days x 1.17g)

How is protein used as a supplement? Usually in the form of whey protein isolate (a powder) taken by those doing resistance training. A single daily serving of whey usually contains sufficient amino acid leucine to stimulate growth when the muscle has been exercised. This is what a gym goer might take on a daily basis to support their training. For a review of daily protein requirements, by age and activity level, read here.
A typical whey protein daily serving size is 30 to 32g, varying between different brands.
Using a typical whey protein isolate bought online (here we will use California Gold brand), a serving 31g costs SG$1.97 (US$1.52) per serving. Approx SG$60 (US$46) based on 30 days consumption, compared to the US$20 as in the FaceBook advertisement.

What is the lesson to be learnt here? Cost aside...
The total monthly protein dose from IM8 supplementation provides approximately the same weight as a typical daily serving sufficient to support strength training.
I am not assuming that IM8 users are gym goers but certainly they are interested in positive health outcomes. Perhaps they are doing the 2 to 3 strength workouts per week, as recommended by health authorities around the world.
So what are IM8 consumers really paying for?
The convenience of a single daily scoop that supports one's nutritional needs? The assurance of celebrity endorsement and a board of scientists advising the company, the handsome tattoo covered David Beckham, the voice of the popular online nutrition expert Simon Hill? (Simon, have you sold out? Open to a conversation here)

Final Thoughts
Unfortunately, the protein in a serving of IM8 is nowhere near the level you’d expect from a genuine protein supplement. It’s roughly the same as the amount found in a tiny cube of chicken or beef, no bigger than the tip of your finger.
And if you are are affluent enough to be buying IM8, you’re almost certainly not short of dietary protein. So what role do these 'essential amino acids' really play when they are marketed as a replacement for a supplement? The impression is that you are getting an all-in-one, health-boosting product. The reality is far less impressive than the claim.
