For our 2026 PARAS'10 Virtual tab, we have chosen a route that features some of the Singapore's key historic landmarks.

In a quiet corner of Esplanade Park sits a 3.5m-tall marble pagoda, commemorating Major-General Lim Bo Seng, a veteran of World War 2. Google Location.

Lim Bo Seng (1909 to 1944) was a Singapore-based Chinese businessman and resistance leader celebrated as one of the country's most revered war heroes for his role fighting the Japanese occupation during the Second World War.

Born in Fujian, China, in 1909, Lim moved to Singapore as a young man and built a successful career in manufacturing, becoming a prominent and wealthy businessman with strong ties to the local Chinese community. Beyond commerce, he was deeply involved in civic and philanthropic work, and became active in fundraising for China's resistance against Japanese aggression in the 1930s, channeling significant sums to support the war effort back in China.

When Japan invaded Malaya and Singapore, Lim fled to India and later joined Force 136, a British-led Allied special operations unit tasked with organising resistance and intelligence networks in occupied Southeast Asia. He returned clandestinely to Malaya in 1943 as part of a mission to establish communication lines and coordinate guerrilla resistance against the Japanese, operating under immense personal risk.

In March 1944, Lim was betrayed, captured, and detained by the Kempeitai (Japanese military police) in Perak. Despite brutal torture, he refused to disclose information about the resistance network, and he died in captivity later that year.

After the war, his remains were given a state funeral in Singapore, and he was posthumously honoured as a national hero. Streets, a bridge, and the memorial bear his name today, commemorating his courage, sacrifice and unwavering loyalty to the cause of freedom during one of the darkest periods in the region's history.

On 28 December 2010, the Lim Bo Seng Memorial Cenotaph was gazetted as a national monument together with The Cenotaph and nearby Tan Kim Seng Fountain, collectively known as the Esplanade Park Memorials, preserving its place as a solemn reminder of Singapore's wartime sacrifices across both world wars. Also in the park, the Indian National Army Monument.
