The Cenotaph is Singapore's oldest major war memorial, standing along Connaught Drive within Esplanade Park. Google Location
Plans for a public memorial honouring Straits Settlements servicemen who died in the First World War were first proposed in December 1918. Progress was slow, and it was not until 15 November 1920 that Governor Sir Laurence Guillemard laid the foundation stone, in a ceremony also attended by French Premier Georges Clemenceau. The completed monument was unveiled on 31 March 1922 by the visiting Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII.
Designed by architect Denis Santry of the firm Swan & Maclaren, who also designed Sultan Mosque and the former Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, the memorial was modelled on the original Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, and built from local white granite standing nearly 60 feet tall. It was originally raised to honour the memory of 124 men from Singapore who left for the battlefields of Europe and never returned.
Following the Second World War, a second dedication was added in 1951 to commemorate those who died between 1939 and 1945, this time without individual names. The front of the structure bears the inscription "The Glorious Dead" alongside the years 1914 to 1918, while the reverse carries the phrase "They died that we might live" in Singapore's four official languages, marking the years 1939 to 1945.
On 28 December 2010, the Cenotaph was gazetted as a national monument together with the nearby Lim Bo Seng Memorial and Tan Kim Seng Fountain, collectively known as the Esplanade Park Memorials, preserving its place as a solemn reminder of Singapore's wartime sacrifices across both world wars. Also in the park, the Indian National Army Monument.
